IEP Process |
|
Special Education Process – the basicsReferral for Special Education can be made by anyone Consent for evaluation must be obtained from the parent within a reasonable amount of time, or the SD can refuse to evaluate, giving the parent PWN, and parent rights booklet. An initial evaluation must be completed within 60 school days from written parent consent to the date of the meeting to consider eligibility. If the child is eligible the school district shall conduct a meeting to develop an initial IEP within 30 calendar days of a determination that the child needs special education. A school district must obtain informed consent from the parent of the child before the initial provision of special education and related services to the child. This is usually done immediately after the initial IEP is written. The IEP is written for a period of one year. The IEP can be changed before the year is up if it is not working for the child, but must be reviewed and rewritten at least once every 365 days. The IEP will detail how often parents will receive progress reports on their child’s goals. At least every 3 years the child will be reevaluated to determine if the child still has a disability and because of that disability continues to need specially designed instruction. |
